Kyle's Story

I'm Kyle, the founder of PineCompute. My path to AI started unconventionally: studying neuroscience at Boston University, I became obsessed with how brains retrieve information—how context triggers memory, how associations form, how decision-making actually works. That curiosity shaped everything that came after.

When I started building AI systems, I realized that retrieval-augmented generation wasn't just clever engineering—it was mimicking how human memory actually functions. And I realized something else: if I understand how minds work, I can build AI that respects how businesses work. So I built locally. No cloud vendor lock-in. No external dependencies. Just PrivateGPT, Ollama, and a 16GB Linux PC, solving real problems.

Over the years I've built everything from trading systems to survival apps to multiplayer games. But every single project taught me the same lesson: the best AI is the AI you control. Not the AI you rent from a vendor. The AI that lives on your hardware, touches only your data, and answers to you.

"Small businesses deserve AI superpowers without vendor lock-in or privacy compromises. That's what we're building at PineCompute."

Today, alongside co-founder David Rainear Jr., I'm building PineCompute Core and other PineCompute products that turn your private files into an expert assistant that never leaves your server. Because privacy isn't a premium feature. It's a foundation.

This isn't just another AI company. We're building something different: a philosophy where privacy, sovereignty, and intelligence coexist. Where you don't have to sacrifice control to get superpowers.

Co-Founder, Infrastructure

Hey, I'm David.

I'm the infrastructure half of PineCompute. I'm usually the person asking what happens after the demo works: where it runs, how it gets updated, what breaks, and whether somebody can actually fix it when things get weird.

My day-to-day world is full of servers, endpoints, accounts, networks, and the occasional problem that makes no sense until it suddenly does. I like self-hosting, practical security, and setups people can understand without needing a mystery cloud dashboard.

At PineCompute, I keep us thinking about the unglamorous parts: deployment, access, updates, support, and making sure local-first software is useful outside a perfect test environment. If we build it, somebody should be able to run it and know where their data is.

Outside of that, I build small home-lab projects with Raspberry Pis, including running Pi-hole for network-wide ad blocking and experimenting with practical, self-hosted services. I also make small games under Sw00d Games. Liar's Dice started as the kind of tabletop game I already liked and turned into a Playdate release after a lot of testing, tinkering, and handing it around to see what broke.

The Founders' Journey

Founded PineCompute

2024 – Present

Kyle and David are building PineCompute Core, an open-source, fully on-premise "company brain" for small businesses. Kyle leads AI and product development while David brings the infrastructure and operations perspective.

Independent AI & Full-Stack Development

2022 – 2024

Dove deep into local AI deployment, building systems with PrivateGPT, Ollama, and vector databases. Created multiplayer games, crypto trading bots, and health AI prototypes—all while learning to bridge neuroscience insights with practical software engineering.

AI & DevOps Experimentation

2020 – 2022

Specialized in deploying AI models locally using open-source tools. Optimized Linux environments for low-resource AI inference, experimented with vector databases (ChromaDB, FAISS), and built Gradio interfaces for offline AI applications.

Neuroscience Studies at Boston University (Kyle)

2015

Studied how biological neural networks process and retrieve information. This foundational understanding of memory, context, and association became the conceptual blueprint for building AI systems that augment human decision-making.

Computer Science & Information Systems at Stockton University (David)

2014

Studied computer science and information systems, building a foundation in software, systems, and the infrastructure perspective he brings to PineCompute.

Key Projects

PineCompute Core

Open-source "company brain" that turns private files (PDFs, Drive folders, emails) into an expert LLM assistant. Fully on-premise with zero cloud dependencies—built on PrivateGPT backbone with custom interfaces.

PrivateGPT Ollama Qdrant Python

PineHealth

Medical AI system built on PrivateGPT that processes medical textbooks and provides health consultations. All data stays on local hardware—perfect for healthcare orgs concerned about HIPAA compliance.

PrivateGPT Medical NLP Local RAG

PineProject

Project management and collaboration built on private AI—turns your project knowledge (tasks, docs, decisions) into a queryable expert. Runs entirely on your infrastructure, no cloud dependency.

Local RAG Task Management Collaboration

Live & Out in the Wild

These are shipped, live, and actually being used—they're what pays the bills so we can keep building the harder stuff above.
